A series of public events will take place in Papua New Guinea as the country approaches its 50th Independence Day on September 16, 2025. The U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby has issued a security alert for American citizens and other residents, noting both the celebratory nature of these events and potential security risks associated with large gatherings.

The schedule includes National Repentance Day on August 26, Day of Reconciliation on August 30, and PNG Defense Week from September 1 to 7. During Defense Week, there will be naval ship viewings near the Waterfront (September 2-3), a parade along Port Moresby’s coastline (September 4), and a Military Tattoo performance at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium (September 5). From September 12 to 16, the Amazing Port Moresby Festival will be held at Ela Beach, with a float parade scheduled for the morning of September 12 from Murray Barracks to Ela Beach.

On Independence Day itself, official ceremonies include a flag raising at the National Parliament in the morning, followed by breakfast and a state function. The afternoon features a flag lowering at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium and evening celebrations at Sir John Guise Stadium. The government has also declared September 15 and 17 as additional national holidays.

According to the embassy, “Large gatherings and traffic congestion during these events may increase risks of petty crime, such as pickpocketing and theft, as well as more serious threats, including carjacking, physical assault, and mob violence. As Independence Day approaches, the likelihood of overwhelmed security forces, alcohol-related disorderly behavior, and potential accidents or altercations may rise.”

The embassy recommends several precautions: “Good situational awareness accompanied with an adherence to security policies and recommendations significantly reduces the risk of becoming a victim of crime. To minimize risk, please consider the following security guidelines.” These include avoiding crowds; keeping a low profile; being aware of surroundings; trusting instincts; securing vehicles and valuables; limiting travel during major events; traveling in groups; planning transportation carefully; using alarms consistently; not resisting robbery attempts; reviewing personal security plans regularly; and keeping travel documents up to date.
