KfW IPEX-Bank has announced it will provide EUR 45 million in financing to Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport). The funding consists of both an extension and increase of existing loans, with the aim of supporting investment in the port’s infrastructure, including warehouses and port facilities.

Duisport is recognized as the world’s largest inland port and forms part of the Trans-European Networks (TEN) core network. These networks are designed to improve infrastructure across Europe by connecting regions and national transport systems.

The port plays a significant role in Germany’s transport sector. It features the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT), which began operations last year. This terminal enables goods to be transferred between ships, rail, and trucks, and offers strong connections to major seaports such as Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam.

Aida Welker, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank, stated: “It is very important to us to strengthen Germany as a business location with our financings. duisport plays a central role, particularly for the German export industry.”

Markus Bangen, CEO of duisport, said: “The financing from KfW IPEX-Bank helps us to implement important infrastructure projects. It enables us to secure the supplies for industry and trade, strengthen Germany as an export location and improve the Duisburger Hafen's connection to international markets.”

Duisburger Hafen AG operates a trimodal logistics hub that handles over 20,000 ships and 25,000 trains annually. The port moves more than 100 million tonnes of cargo each year and processes around four million containers (TEU). The facility includes 21 docks, 10 container terminals, and approximately 200 kilometres of its own railway tracks.

About 300 transport and logistics companies operate at duisport’s site. The port supports around 52,000 jobs directly or indirectly through its activities in logistics. Ownership is divided between the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (two thirds) and the city of Duisburg (one third).
