The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert advising increased caution for foreigners and tourists in Kenya, particularly in high-traffic areas such as hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls, markets, schools, police stations, and places of worship. The embassy warns that terrorist groups like al-Shabaab remain an ongoing threat throughout the country and especially in Nairobi.
According to the alert: "Terrorist groups, such as al-Shabaab, are an ongoing and persistent threat not only in Kenya as a whole, but also in Nairobi. Locations such as hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists continue to be attractive targets. Terrorist groups can attack with little to no warning. While attacks can occur at any time, concerns are heightened in proximity to anniversary dates of prior attacks such as August 7th, September 11th, September 21st Westgate Mall attack, and the October 7th Hamas attack against Israel."
The embassy recommends several precautions for those residing or traveling in Kenya. These include staying alert when visiting locations popular with tourists or foreigners; reviewing personal security plans; remaining aware of surroundings; monitoring local media for updates; avoiding protest areas and demonstrations; steering clear of crowds; and keeping a low profile.
