The United States reinforced its engagement in the Pacific region during Chargé d’Affaires David Gehrenbeck’s first official visit to the Cook Islands. The trip was scheduled to coincide with Te Maeva Nui, which marks 60 years since the Cook Islands’ Constitution came into effect. Gehrenbeck, accompanied by National Security Council Senior Director David Copley and Deputy Assistant Secretary Joshua Kroon, participated in local events including cultural performances, ceremonies, church services, and a Constitution Day dinner hosted by Prime Minister Mark Brown.
During the week-long visit, U.S. representatives met with government officials, scientists, and civil society leaders to discuss marine conservation, seabed stewardship, sustainable fisheries, and regional security. The delegation signed a joint statement on seabed mineral cooperation with Cook Islands officials to affirm collaboration on responsible ocean resource management based on scientific principles.
Other activities included visiting the CIC Science Center and touring the Anuanua Moana research vessel operated by Moana Minerals. The U.S. team also worked to strengthen ties with agencies such as the Ministry of Marine Resources, Seabed Minerals Authority, and Te Ipukarea Society—a local non-governmental organization focused on biodiversity and environmental awareness.
The visit provided opportunities for engagement with the American community in the Cook Islands as well as cooperation with regional partners from Australia and New Zealand.
