The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has launched the inaugural Young South Asian Leaders Initiative (YSALI) workshop in Colombo. The event, which began on August 18, 2025, was opened by U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Shelly Seaver, and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Hon. Sunil Gamage.

More than 80 participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are attending the three-day workshop. These individuals were chosen from alumni of previous U.S. government initiatives and represent emerging leaders in fields such as business, government, academia, and health.

Ambassador Julie Chung addressed the group at the opening ceremony: “Each of you has already demonstrated leadership through your participation in U.S. government exchange programs, taking the initiative to create change—often in challenging circumstances. Now, by coming together, you are combining your ideas, talents, and dreams to shape the future of this region. Whether you’re focused on entrepreneurship, civic engagement, or social innovation, we want to support your efforts and share the ideas and approaches that have fueled American innovation and excellence—because when you succeed, the Indo-Pacific region becomes stronger, more connected, and more prosperous for all.”

The YSALI workshop aims to foster regional collaboration by bringing together youth leaders to discuss shared challenges related to economic development and civic participation. Participants will engage with experts from various sectors through interactive sessions designed to share knowledge about entrepreneurship and leadership.

The program also includes a YSALI Expo where local organizations, U.S. partners, and alumni can network and showcase projects related to business development and civic initiatives.

YSALI was launched during the UN General Assembly in September 2024 as part of a broader effort by the U.S. Department of State to empower young leaders in South Asia with resources for building regional connections and promoting economic growth.
