Richard M. Mills, Jr. U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria | U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert regarding expected protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja and other cities from August 15 to 17, 2025. According to the Embassy’s Regional Security Office (RSO), IMN demonstrations are likely to take place after afternoon prayers.

Authorities note that previous IMN protests have sometimes led to confrontations with Nigerian security forces, including the use of physical force, roadblocks, teargas, and gunfire. The RSO identified several locations where protests may occur, such as Fouad Lababidi Mosque, National Mosque on Constitution Avenue, Eagle Square and Unity Fountain on Shehu Shagari Way, Banex Plaza, and Berger Junction.

The Embassy advised individuals to avoid protest areas and crowds, exercise caution near large gatherings, monitor local media for updates, remain aware of their surroundings, keep a low profile, review personal security plans, ensure mobile phones are charged for emergencies, and carry proper identification.

The Consular Sections at both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain open during this period. Updates can be found on the official embassy website at https://ng.usembassy.gov/.
