The U.S. Embassy in Seoul has informed American citizens living in South Korea about a nationwide civil defense drill scheduled for August 20, 2025. The exercise, organized by the Republic of Korea government, will start at 2:00 p.m. local time with an air-raid warning and conclude at 2:20 p.m. when the lifting siren sounds.

During the drill, Korean authorities will restrict movement for both residents and vehicles for approximately 15 minutes following the initial warning. "While this exercise is not an actual emergency, please cooperate with all instructions from Korean authorities," the embassy stated.

Authorities recommend that foreign nationals download the Emergency Ready App to receive safety messages on the day of the drill. Additional guidance advises drivers to park or pull over if directed and pedestrians to move to designated shelters and follow instructions from emergency staff.

The embassy encourages Americans to monitor local media for updates and ensure their information is current with the U.S. Embassy through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov. Those who did not receive this alert are advised to enroll in STEP as well.

Consular operations at the embassy, including visa interviews and passport services, will continue without interruption during the drill. U.S. citizens needing emergency assistance can contact 02-397-4114 or email SeoulInfoACS@state.gov.

Further details about previous drills and shelter locations are available through South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
