The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has issued an emergency message to American citizens in Albania as wildfires continue to affect multiple regions across the country. The embassy is monitoring the situation and advises U.S. citizens to be cautious, especially in areas under evacuation orders.
According to the embassy, several locations are currently subject to evacuations due to ongoing fires. Americans needing assistance can contact the embassy by phone at 4224-7285 from within Albania or +355-4224-7285 from outside the country, or by email at ACSTirana@state.gov.
The embassy urges U.S. citizens to avoid affected areas and follow police instructions regarding road closures and traffic disruptions. "U.S. Citizens should avoid affected areas, especially those under evacuation orders, and follow police instructions regarding road closures or traffic disruptions. Monitor local news for updates on wildfire conditions and plan your routes accordingly. Google Maps may also provide real-time information on road closures and wildfire activity."
Wildfires are a recurring issue in Albania, with smoke inhalation posing health risks even for those not near active flames. The embassy recommends immediate evacuation if a fire is near one's location or residence: "Wildfires are common in Albania. Smoke inhalation poses a serious health risk, even if you are not near the flames. If a wildfire is near your location, including your residence, evacuate immediately to an unaffected area."
Travelers are advised against driving through areas impacted by wildfires or heavy smoke unless absolutely necessary: "Do not attempt to drive through areas that are affected by wildfires or heavy smoke. Seek an alternate route or consider delaying travel if an alternate route is not available. If you have no other choice but to drive through smoke from a wildfire, drive slowly with the windows up, outside air vents closed, and headlights on for increased visibility."
Those who are safe should keep informed via local news sources and update family members about their status: "We strongly encourage U.S. citizens in affected areas who are safe to monitor local news and to contact their loved ones directly and/or update their status on social media."
In case of emergencies requiring immediate response, individuals should call 127 for ambulance services, 112 for police assistance, or 128 for fire department support; additional information can be obtained from the National Emergency service at info@urgjenca.gov.al (http://urgjenca.gov.al/).
