Abigail L. Dressel has assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique as of August 11, 2025. Dressel, a career diplomat, will lead the U.S. Mission in Maputo and focus on strengthening ties between the United States and Mozambique.

“It is an honor to return to Mozambique, an important partner of the United States,” said Chargé d’Affaires Dressel. “I look forward to deepening our partnership with Mozambique to make both of our countries and peoples safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”

This marks her second diplomatic assignment in Mozambique and her third posting in Africa. From 2019 to 2022, she was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo.

Dressel’s diplomatic career spans over twenty years with leadership roles across Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Before returning to Mozambique, she served as Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires from 2022 to 2025. She has also held positions as Counselor for Public Affairs at U.S. Missions in Brazil and Colombia, and was Consul in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Her previous assignments include postings at U.S. Embassies in Portugal, Angola, Peru, and El Salvador. In Washington D.C., she led global media outreach for the Department of State’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs.

Dressel is a recipient of several awards for her service, including the Presidential Rank Award recognizing exceptional leadership.

She is originally from Wallingford, Connecticut; holds a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University; speaks Portuguese and Spanish; is married; and has two children.
