Abigail L. Dressel has taken on the role of Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, as of August 11, 2025. This marks her second diplomatic assignment in Mozambique and her third posting in Africa.
Dressel brings over twenty years of experience in U.S. foreign policy to her new position. She previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo from 2019 to 2022. Before returning to Mozambique, she held the roles of Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 2022 and 2025.
Her career includes leadership positions across several continents. Dressel was Counselor for Public Affairs at U.S. Missions in Brazil and Colombia and served as Consul in Minas Gerais, Brazil. She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor.
Other assignments have included postings at U.S. Embassies in Portugal, Angola, Peru, and El Salvador. In Washington, she directed global media outreach for the Bureau of Global Public Affairs at the Department of State.
Dressel’s work has been recognized with multiple awards such as the Presidential Rank Award for exceptional leadership and service.
She is originally from Wallingford, Connecticut, holds a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University, and speaks Portuguese and Spanish fluently. Dressel is married with two children.
