Interns and junior analysts from the World Bank Treasury and Pension departments volunteered at Bread for the City’s weekly Farmers Market in Washington, D.C. this summer. The event allowed participants to help distribute fresh produce to local families, supporting efforts to improve access to healthy food for low-income residents.

Bread for the City is a nonprofit that has provided services such as food distribution, clothing, medical care, and legal assistance in Washington, D.C. since 1974. The organization works to fight poverty and inequality within the city.

Precious Ndidiamaka Ozegbe, a Junior Analyst who led the volunteer effort, said: “All our work supports the mission of ending poverty, and this initiative provides a meaningful and immediate way to connect directly with the people.”

Faith Ayoola, a summer intern from Nigeria, noted: “As an intern, you don’t have to have a lot to give, but you can give back from what you have.” She also observed Bread for the City’s approach: “People only took what they actually needed.”

Junior analyst Shrey Addagatla commented on development challenges worldwide: “volunteering with Bread for the City reminds us that development is a persistent challenge across the entire globe. Although the World Bank’s projects are one part of a much larger effort to build a better world, experiences like these are important for us to reflect and recognize the efforts we can make in our personal lives.”

Alexander Gee coordinated lines outside the market and reflected on his experience engaging with local residents: “Hearing about their lives and their backgrounds enriched my understanding of the city and the people where the World Bank offices are located.”

The World Bank says activities like this reinforce its mission of alleviating poverty while encouraging empathy and service among staff. Prospective interns interested in participating in similar programs can find more information on requirements and dates at its Student Careers page.
