The United States has expressed support for the recent General Border Committee meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, which aimed to strengthen the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. In a statement issued on August 7, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the meeting was an important step toward solidifying the ceasefire and establishing an ASEAN observation mechanism.
Rubio stated, "The United States welcomes the General Border Committee meeting today in Kuala Lumpur as an important step forward in solidifying the ceasefire arrangement and establishing the ASEAN observation mechanism. President Trump and I expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict. We remain grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire process, a direct result of his willingness to co-organize with the United States the July 28 Special Meeting to address the conflict. We look forward to supporting Malaysia, ASEAN, and both countries as this process moves forward."
Malaysia played a key role by hosting both parties and facilitating dialogue following tensions at their shared border. The July 28 Special Meeting was co-organized by Malaysia and the United States in response to ongoing disputes between Cambodia and Thailand.
ASEAN's involvement is seen as critical for monitoring adherence to any agreements reached during these talks.
