Michael Adler, Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Belgium

U.S. citizens in Belgium will have the opportunity to access Social Security services at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels from August 11 to 13. A representative from the Federal Benefits Unit based in London will be available during these dates to assist with various services, including updating bank details, applying for Social Security Numbers or replacement cards, and returning the Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire.

The embassy has stated that appointments are required and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will go to beneficiaries who must confirm their identity before updating bank information. There will not be walk-in service available.

To request an appointment, individuals should email USCitizenBrussels@state.gov with “FBU Appointment [first name(s) LAST NAME of applicant]” as the subject line. In the email body, applicants should specify which service they need—such as change of bank, SSN application, SSA-7162 replacement, return of Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire, or RFBO Authorization.

Applicants looking to update their bank details must bring original identification documents and relevant banking information for both current and new accounts. Those applying for a Social Security Number or replacement card are advised to consult instructions provided by the embassy at https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/social-security/how-to-obtain-a-u-s-social-security-number-ssn/ and bring all required original documents plus copies.

For beneficiaries whose benefits have been suspended due to missing Foreign Enforcement Questionnaires, completing Form 7161 is necessary if they receive their own benefits.

Further details about required documents for RFBO Authorizations are outlined in those specific forms; incomplete documentation may result in delayed or cancelled appointments.
