Representatives from Madagascar’s Ministry of Mining and other stakeholders gathered for the official presentation of a new Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) website and data integration platform. The project, titled “Systematic Disclosure and Data Integration,” is funded by the United States Government to support EITI-Madagascar.
Ambassador Claire A. Pierangelo spoke at the event, highlighting the significance of this initiative for Madagascar’s mining sector. She stated, “It is an honor to join you today for the Official Presentation of the new Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative website and data integration platform.”
Pierangelo acknowledged the leadership role of the Minister as an EITI Champion and noted, “The ‘Systematic Disclosure and Data Integration’ project, funded by the United States Government for EITI-Madagascar, is a significant step forward in promoting transparency in the mining industry. This initiative will help streamline the preparation of annual reconciliation reports, saving both time and money. I am confident that it will support Madagascar in maintaining its membership in the EITI process, improving its mining environment, and attracting more investment to the country.”
She also addressed recent trends in Madagascar’s mining sector: “It is encouraging to see the mining sector emerging as a key driver of Madagascar’s economy. Your abundant natural resources, when managed transparently, hold the promise of a brighter future for the next generation. Over the past decade, the mining sector has contributed 4.5 percent to GDP, with its share of exports rising from 23 percent in 2020 to 44 percent in 2022.”
Ambassador Pierangelo emphasized that growth in this industry should benefit local communities: “As the mining industry continues to expand, it has the potential to bring prosperity through job creation and significant government revenue. At the same time, it is absolutely essential to ensure that local communities in mining regions benefit directly from these activities and government income, fostering a peaceful and sustainable environment. This growth will also create opportunities for education, training, and prestigious exchange programs that will empower individuals in impacted regions.”
Referencing her recent visit to Toliara, she said: “During my recent visit to Toliara, I emphasized the importance of American businesses operating with the highest standards of transparency and integrity, both at home and abroad. U.S. enterprises must adhere to American laws as well as host country regulations, aligning perfectly with the transparency goals of this project.”
She concluded her remarks by commending Mr. Sergio Marc: “In closing, I would like to commend Mr. Sergio Marc, Executive Secretary of EITI-Madagascar, for his leadership in successfully implementing this project despite challenges. Your dedication and the efforts of your team are important in improving the environment of the mining sector. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to a better future.” She also thanked all involved staff members from both EITI-Madagascar and Madagascar’s Ministry of Mines.
