Media reports indicate that a demonstration is scheduled to occur at the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia on Friday, August 1, at 9:00 am. Another demonstration is planned for the Brazilian Central Bank in Brasilia on Sunday, August 3, at 10:00 am.

The U.S. Embassy has advised American citizens to avoid areas where rallies and demonstrations are taking place due to the potential for conflicts between police, demonstrators, and counterdemonstrations. The embassy notes that even peaceful gatherings can turn violent without warning.

"U.S. citizens should avoid areas around rallies and demonstrations as there could be conflicts between police, demonstrators, and counterdemonstrations, which could develop unexpectedly. Exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, as even peaceful demonstrations have the potential to turn violent without warning."

The embassy recommends several actions for those in Brasilia during this period: avoid crowds and demonstrations; monitor local media for updates; be aware of possible traffic disruptions; plan alternate routes; stay aware of your surroundings; and notify friends and family about your whereabouts and safety.

For assistance or emergencies, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy Brasília by phone at (61) 3312-7000 or after hours at (61) 3312-7400. Additional information is available on the embassy’s website at https://br.usembassy.gov/. Travelers are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates from the State Department.
