Ambassador Claire A. Pierangelo addressed officials and ministers in Madagascar on World Day Against Trafficking In Persons, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking in the country. She recognized the progress made by the National Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons (BNLTEH), noting their actions against organized exploitation and identification of criminals involved in both online and physical forms of trafficking.

Pierangelo stated, "Trafficking In Persons is a form of organized transnational crime, and we are pleased to see the concrete progress made to combat organized exploitation and to identify criminals both in online spheres and with physical human trafficking.  Madagascar continues to expand initiatives to support these efforts, including BNLTEH’s initiative to liaise with regional partner authorities and through the growing partnership between the U.S. and Madagascar."

She also emphasized that law enforcement capacity has been strengthened through U.S.-funded training programs provided by UNODC and the International Law Enforcement Academy. These programs have resulted in multiple arrests related to trafficking cases, while government and civil society responses have been enhanced via the U.S. International Visitor Leadership Program.

Pierangelo added, "As important is Madagascar’s partnership with international organizations such as those here today.  They are working everyday to support the victims of trafficking."

She reiterated the United States’ commitment: "The U.S. government remains committed to supporting Madagascar to advance human rights, and to continue the fight against trafficking in persons through continued partnership and capacity building.  Again, our congratulations on your progress as we mark this important occasion."

In closing, she thanked local leaders for their support: "Let me give my thanks to the Minister of Labor and the Prime Minister for all their support in what BNLTEH is trying to do."
