A tsunami alert has been issued for the entire coast of Peru, from La Cruz in the north to Ilo in the south, following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on July 29, 2025. The Peruvian Navy and government authorities warn that a tsunami could reach Peruvian coastal areas between 10:10 a.m. and 12:31 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that waves may reach heights of one to three meters above normal tide levels.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from all coastal areas until further notice. Local authorities recommend monitoring official sources and media updates for new information and following any instructions provided by emergency services or local officials. For U.S. citizens in Peru seeking assistance or more information, contact details for the U.S. Embassy in Lima and Consular Agency in Cusco have been provided, along with resources from the State Department’s Consular Affairs office.

On September 16, 2024, the U.S. Department of State launched an updated version of its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows travelers to receive security alerts; continued participation requires re-enrollment at step.state.gov.

"Please remain alert to updates from local authorities and the media. Avoid all coastal areas until the alert is lifted."
