The U.S. Mission in Ecuador has informed American citizens residing or traveling in the country of a tsunami warning for the Ecuadorian coast. The alert follows a magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck near the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at approximately 6:25 p.m. local time.
Ecuador’s Instituto Oceanografico y Antartido de la Armada (INOCAR) issued a warning at 8:54 p.m., indicating that a tsunami is likely to reach Ecuador’s coastline on the morning of July 30, 2025. According to INOCAR, waves greater than three meters above tide level are possible.
The estimated times for tsunami wave arrival in Ecuador have been provided. For the Galapagos Islands, arrival is expected between 9:48 and 10:11 a.m. on July 30th. On the mainland, coastal areas could see waves between 10:50 a.m. and 1:19 p.m., with specific estimates including Esmeraldas at 11:00 a.m., Manta at 11:06 a.m., Salinas at 11:16 a.m., and Guayaquil at 3:48 p.m.
