Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) of the United States are required to present a valid Form I-551, also known as a Green Card, when returning to the U.S. after traveling abroad for less than one year. If an LPR’s Green Card is lost, stolen, or expired while outside the country, they may apply for a Transportation Boarding Foil to help them return.
To obtain this document, applicants must complete Form I-131A and pay the fee online via the USCIS website. The process requires several documents: a valid passport, evidence of LPR status such as a copy of the Green Card or an I-551 stamp, a police report if relevant, two passport-sized photos, an A-Number, the completed application form, and proof of payment. After submitting these materials and attending an interview at the embassy or consulate, successful applicants will have the Boarding Foil placed in their passport. This foil is valid for 30 days.
