Senegal has joined the Artemis Accords, an international coalition focused on peaceful and sustainable space exploration. The signing took place on July 24, 2025, in Washington, DC. The event was attended by representatives from NASA, the U.S. Department of State, and a Senegalese delegation led by Dr. Maram Kairé, Director General of the Senegalese Space Studies Agency (ASES).

“We are proud to welcome Senegal as a signatory of the Artemis Accords,” said Michael Raynor, U.S. Ambassador to Senegal. “This partnership will advance our countries’ shared efforts in science and technology and help build a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous future in space.”

With this agreement, Senegal becomes the fourth African nation to join the initiative. The Artemis Accords were initially launched by the United States along with seven partner nations to set principles for exploring celestial bodies like the Moon and Mars. These principles include transparency, sustainable resource management in space, conflict prevention, and scientific data sharing.

“Senegal’s accession to the Artemis Accords reflects our commitment to anchoring our space ambitions within a multilateral, responsible, and transparent framework. This signature marks a significant milestone in our space diplomacy and our ambition to contribute actively to the peaceful exploration of space,” stated Dr. Maram Kairé.

By joining 54 other countries in this initiative, Senegal aims to enhance its role in the global space sector while strengthening partnerships with the United States through opportunities for training and technology transfer for ASES researchers and engineers.
