Cambridge scholars join British Academy Fellowship with recognition across diverse fields

Twelve academics from the University of Cambridge have been elected as Fellows of the British Academy in 2025. They join a group of 92 scholars recognized for their contributions to fields like medieval history and international relations.

The new Cambridge Fellows include Professor Jeremy Adelman, Professor Anthony Bale, Professor Annabel Brett, Professor Hasok Chang, Professor Jennifer Howard-Grenville, Professor Barak Kushner, Professor Marta Mirazón Lahr, Professor Yael Navaro, Professor Joanna Page, Professor Clare Pettitt, Professor Diane Reay, and Professor John Robb.

Founded in 1902, the British Academy is the UK's national academy for humanities and social sciences. It consists of over 1700 leading minds from the UK and abroad. Current Fellows include notable figures such as classicist Dame Mary Beard and historian Sir Simon Schama.

In 2025, the Academy has elected a total of 58 UK Fellows, 30 International Fellows, and four Honorary Fellows.

Professor Marta Mirazón Lahr expressed her gratitude: “I am honoured and delighted to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy... My work spans anthropology and archaeology.”

Professor Joanna Page shared her thoughts: “I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy... I would particularly like to thank the vibrant community of Latin Americanists at Cambridge.”

Professor Barak Kushner stated: “It is an honour to be recognised by the British Academy... Recognition of this kind brings more attention to the importance of transnational history when researching East Asia.”

Professor Yael Navaro remarked: “I feel truly honoured to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy. It couldn't be a more important time to mobilise the social sciences and humanities.”

British Academy President Susan J. Smith welcomed this year's new Fellows: “One of my first acts as the incoming President... With specialisms ranging from neuroscience to music... Champions of research excellence.”
