The Wolfson Foundation has announced funding for the redevelopment of The House of Death gallery at the Egypt Centre. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance museums and galleries by improving how nationally significant collections are displayed and interpreted for the public.
The upcoming project aims to transform a key area within the Egypt Centre into an advanced, accessible, and immersive learning environment. Planned improvements include creating interactive spaces with smellscapes and soundscapes, installing automatic doors for better wheelchair access, enhancing display cases for improved environmental conditions and lighting, and updating interpretation panels to reflect current research.
This redevelopment will modernize the museum while safeguarding its collection of 7,000 objects for future generations. Dr. Ken Griffin, Curator of the Egypt Centre, expressed gratitude towards the Wolfson Foundation: “We are extremely grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for this grant, which will make a meaningful contribution towards the redevelopment."
Paul Ramsbottom, Chief Executive of the Wolfson Foundation, commented on the project’s impact: “The refurbishment of the House of Death Gallery within the Egypt Centre will create a brilliantly immersive experience.”
The newly revamped gallery is set to reopen in January 2026.
