Suva, Fiji - July 22, 2025
Anna Bjerde, World Bank Managing Director of Operations, addressed the Pacific Islands Forum Economic Ministers Meeting in Suva. In her remarks, she emphasized the World Bank Group's commitment to supporting the Pacific region's vision for a resilient and prosperous future.
Bjerde acknowledged the efforts of Pacific leaders in defining their future through initiatives like the "2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent" and the "Pacific Roadmap for Economic Development." She stated, "The 2050 Strategy is more than a plan. It is a promise to your people... A promise of a resilient, secure, and prosperous Pacific."
She highlighted challenges facing the region, including economic growth projections and inflation impacts. Bjerde noted that global growth is expected to slow to 2.3 percent in 2025 while emphasizing that trade costs are particularly high in the Pacific.
To address these issues, Bjerde announced several initiatives such as the "Pacific Trade Facilitation Project" aimed at reducing trading time and costs by simplifying customs procedures. Additionally, she mentioned ongoing work with regional countries on projects like safeguarding correspondent banking relations.
Climate resilience was another focus area. Bjerde discussed investments in resilient infrastructure and renewable energy through programs like the "Pacific Climate Resilient Transport Program," which aims to strengthen transport systems across six countries.
Job creation was also addressed as Bjerde spoke about improving access to finance for small enterprises and enhancing education opportunities. She announced an upcoming revision to procurement frameworks that would require companies working on World Bank-funded projects to include local labor costs.
Lastly, Bjerde mentioned preparations for a new Small States Strategy tailored specifically for countries like those in the Pacific region.
In conclusion, Anna Bjerde reiterated the World Bank Group's dedication: "We will work with you... Because when we row together, we can build a more connected, more resilient, and more prosperous Pacific."
