On July 10, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Majuro hosted an event called “Stand and Defend” aboard the USS Cincinnati to honor Marshallese U.S. military veterans. The event took place on the deck of the Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship and aimed to recognize the bond between the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands through military service.

The dinner reception included participation from American Legion Post 22 and other Marshallese veterans, including Foreign Minister Kalani Kaneko, a supporter of veterans and defense cooperation. The gathering highlighted the strong ties between communities, families, and service members who have contributed to the friendship between both nations over generations.

SSG Renee Cabral hosted the program, setting a warm tone for the evening. An opening prayer led by U.S. Army veteran Ainrik George reminded attendees of sacrifices made for shared freedoms and values.

Cultural significance was added by Ebopo Buññin’s performance of the traditional Jojo dance, celebrating cultural heritage alongside military service.

Throughout the evening, stories were shared among veterans and guests, emphasizing service, honor, and community. Against a Pacific Ocean backdrop aboard a symbol of America’s commitment to the region, “Stand and Defend” served as both a tribute and reminder that international bonds are strengthened by those who serve.

The U.S. Embassy Majuro expressed appreciation to all participants in this celebration aimed at honoring past contributions while strengthening current partnerships based on mutual respect and shared values.
