On July 18, 2025, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago declared a nationwide State of Emergency (SOE) due to a highly threatening criminal network operating within and outside the country's correctional facilities. This network is reportedly targeting senior government officials and national institutions. U.S. citizens in Trinidad and Tobago should anticipate an increased police and military presence.
During the SOE, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will have enhanced authority to arrest individuals suspected of illegal activities and search public and private premises as necessary. Bail provisions are suspended for those suspected of committing crimes, and members of the Defense Force will operate under similar regulations to the TTPS. Currently, no curfew or restrictions on public assemblies are in effect.
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago will monitor the SOE daily, with potential changes to restrictions.
U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling to certain areas such as Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and specific parts of Queen’s Park Savannah. They must also avoid beaches, downtown Port of Spain, Fort George, and Queen’s Park Savannah after dark.
U.S. citizens are advised to carry identification at all times, cooperate with local authorities during SOE-mandated activities, monitor reputable news outlets for updates from the Trinidad and Tobago government, ensure they have a valid U.S. passport if seeking travel to the United States, report suspicious activity to local authorities, and encourage friends and family to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
