The World Bank has approved the Second Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP2) to enhance social protection systems in Kenya. This initiative aims to support twelve million citizens, focusing on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, adolescents, and children. The project is backed by a $127.5 million investment from the International Development Association (IDA).

Qimiao Fan, World Bank Division Director for Kenya, stated: “Inclusive growth and poverty reduction are realized when there are more and better jobs as well as more accessible jobs for the poorest and most vulnerable populations.” The project seeks to prepare young people for productive adulthoods and help families with sustainable livelihoods.

KSEIP2 will expand cash-plus programs that complement existing government cash transfers under the National Safety Net Program (NSNP). It aims to promote employment through climate-resilient activities and connect beneficiaries with social insurance schemes.

In response to recurrent droughts in certain regions of Kenya, KSEIP2 will also modernize social protection systems and provide emergency assistance during crises. Shubha Chakravarty, Senior Economist at the World Bank, noted: “The Government of Kenya is committed to supporting opportunities for every Kenyan family to sustainably exit poverty and vulnerability.”

The project aligns with the FY23-FY28 World Bank Group Country Partnership Framework (CPF) goals of enhancing household resilience and preparedness for shocks. It supports Kenya's vision 2030 by providing social security for those unable to support themselves.
