Election campaigns in Uganda have commenced, with political parties such as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) holding primary elections on July 17. Campaign rallies will occur nationwide leading up to the presidential election in January 2026. These events may lead to violence, and security services could respond forcefully, using batons, rubber bullets, tear gas, and gunfire as seen in past election cycles. Some criminal activities might also occur during these rallies.

The U.S. Embassy advises residents to be prepared for potential disruptions by maintaining a supply of food, water, medication, and other essentials for at least 72 hours. Utilities like internet services might be interrupted; hence having additional non-perishable supplies for seven days is recommended.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local media updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, inform friends and family about their safety status, stay aware of their surroundings, exercise caution when traveling at night, review personal security plans and ensure travel documents are current.
