DHAKA, July 16, 2025—Johannes Zutt, Vice President for South Asia at the World Bank, concluded his initial official visit to Bangladesh. He reaffirmed the World Bank's ongoing commitment to assist Bangladesh in addressing its development priorities and supporting its people.
During his visit, Zutt met with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government. He praised the government for implementing critical reforms aimed at establishing economic resilience and improving transparency and accountability within public institutions.
Zutt informed the Chief Adviser about current and future World Bank support in Bangladesh. In response to urgent needs, over $3 billion was committed last fiscal year by the World Bank to enhance essential services such as health, water and sanitation, and social protection; increase investment in infrastructure and environmental sustainability; and support financial and public sector reforms.
“I am delighted to return to Bangladesh, where the people, and notably the youth, are determined to have a better future,” said Zutt. “Our longstanding partnership with Bangladesh has helped lift millions of people out of poverty and we will continue to help the country build economic and climate resilience, mobilize private investment, and create opportunities for meaningful work.”
Zutt also held discussions with other key figures including the Finance Adviser, Planning Adviser, Bangladesh Bank Governor, Special Envoy for International Affairs, senior government officials, and private sector representatives. These discussions focused on emerging challenges and opportunities. The World Bank remains committed to aiding Bangladesh in maintaining a robust growth path that is inclusive.
The World Bank has been a significant partner for Bangladesh since its independence. It has provided more than $46 billion through International Development Association (IDA) financing via grants, interest-free loans, and concessional credits to help address development priorities.
