Charlette Betts is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste. Prior to this role, she was a Senior Advisor to the CEO of the Business Council of International Understanding (BCIU). In that position, she worked on enhancing public-private partnerships to promote U.S. national interests and expanded BCIU’s strategies.

Before her tenure at BCIU, Betts served as Regional Technology Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in São Paulo, Brazil. There, she monitored and supported U.S. government engagement on critical technologies in the Western Hemisphere and acted as Deputy Political and Economic Chief for a year.

Her previous experience includes being Officer in Charge at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she managed technical security for Eastern Africa. She also represented the U.S. Department of State Steering Committees and had assignments in Athens, Greece, and Canberra, Australia.

Before joining the State Department, Betts worked as an algorithm developer and software engineer in defense. She holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
