The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert for U.S. citizens regarding planned protests by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) today, July 11, 2025. The demonstrations are expected to occur following Friday prayers in Abuja and other cities across Nigeria.

Past activities by the IMN have led to physical altercations, roadblocks, and traffic congestion. Potential protest locations include Fouad Lababidi Mosque, National Mosque on Constitution Avenue, Eagle Square and Unity Fountain on Shehu Shagari Way, Banex Plaza, and Berger Junction in Abuja.

U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas where protests are taking place and to steer clear of crowds. They should exercise caution if unexpectedly near large gatherings or protests and monitor local media for updates. It is also recommended to be aware of surroundings, keep a low profile, review personal security plans, keep cell phones charged for emergencies, carry proper identification, stay alert at shopping centers and places of worship, familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings, and vary travel routes and times.
