Charlette Betts, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste | U.S. Embassy in Timor Leste

Charlette Betts is currently the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste. Her previous role was as a Senior Advisor to the CEO of the Business Council of International Understanding (BCIU). In this position, she contributed to increasing public-private partnerships that support U.S. national interests and expanded BCIU's strategies in alignment with the administration.

Before her tenure at BCIU, Betts served as Regional Technology Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in São Paulo, Brazil. There, she focused on monitoring and supporting U.S. government engagement on critical and emerging technologies in the Western Hemisphere. She also spent a year as Acting Deputy Political and Economic Chief in São Paulo.

Betts has also held positions such as Officer in Charge at the U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, where she managed technical security and countermeasures for Eastern Africa. Additionally, she represented the U.S. Department of State Steering Committees and had assignments in Athens, Greece, and Canberra, Australia.

Before joining the State Department, Betts worked in defense as an algorithm developer and software engineer. She holds a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
