The U.S. Embassy in Lima is closely monitoring ongoing protests led by the National Confederation of Small-scale and Artisanal Mining of Peru (CONFEMIN) at the Congress of the Republic. Protestors have occupied two vehicle lanes on Avenida Abancay in Lima since June 27, with plans to remain until their demands are addressed. The Embassy notes that buses carrying protestors may arrive in Lima soon, potentially increasing crowd sizes.
Additionally, CONFEMIN members continue to block roads in various regions including Chala, Arequipa; Chumbivilcas, Cusco; Pataz, La Libertad; and Nasca, Ica. The Embassy advises avoiding demonstrations or roadblocks and exercising caution near large gatherings or protests. It recommends limiting the use of public transportation in affected areas and remaining vigilant when using such services.
The Embassy encourages monitoring local media for updates and reviewing personal security plans. Further information can be found on their website under Alerts and Messages for U.S. citizens.
