The International Development Association (IDA) Private Sector Window (PSW) is playing a significant role in job creation and economic growth in some of the world's most fragile markets. By collaborating with the World Bank Group's private sector arms, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), IDA PSW aims to mobilize sustainable private sector investment.
As of December 2024, $5.4 billion from IDA PSW has successfully mobilized over $31 billion in private investment across low-income and fragile countries. These investments are projected to create three million jobs and deliver four million loans to small businesses.
The IDA PSW supports micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through various initiatives. In Africa, its investment in the Africa Go Green Fund focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy, aiming to create up to 60,000 indirect jobs by financing projects that improve energy access.
Through the Base of the Pyramid program, IDA PSW expands credit access for micro and small enterprises and women-owned businesses. In Kyrgyz Republic alone, it has reached over 100,000 individuals and businesses. Meanwhile, in Madagascar, it is expected to benefit 140,000 enterprises by 2027.
In several African countries including Burkina Faso and Uganda, IDA PSW co-invested in I&P Afrique Entrepreneurs II Fund to provide equity financing for small enterprises. This initiative addresses a significant financing gap while supporting job creation.
In Guinea-Bissau and Liberia, MIGA-backed projects aim to enhance telecom infrastructure with support from IDA PSW. The upgrades focus on improving mobile connectivity which is crucial for social and economic development.
In Haiti, IFC’s investment supported by IDA PSW helped Caribbean Bottling Company create around 400 jobs while improving access to safe drinking water in rural communities.
An agricultural project in Mozambique saw IFC invest alongside AgDevCo with support from IDA PSW into Westfalia Fruto Mozambique. The project developed orchards creating over 600 local jobs within two years.
Myanmar's Anthem Asia fund received co-investment from IDA PSW targeting smaller-sized enterprises filling a critical financing gap aiding job creation there too.
Senegal witnessed an extension of microloans facilitated by $10 million local currency financing via Union des Mutuelles Alliance de Crédit et d'Epargne pour la Production reaching about 13,000 farmers enhancing their business prospects significantly.
Somalia benefited through MIGA's guarantee for Kube Energy establishing a solar hybrid power plant replacing diesel generation underlining improved energy access along with employment opportunities bolstered by this green initiative backed by IDA PSW support again here showing versatility across sectors globally!
Tanzania saw NMB Bank issuing sustainability bonds supported via IFC investments underwritten partially using proceeds generating at least another anticipated total number equating approximately
