Ambassador Christopher Robinson addressed attendees at the U.S. Embassy's Independence Day celebration in Riga, Latvia, on July 2, 2025. The event marked the 249th anniversary of the United States' declaration of independence.

"On behalf of our entire Embassy team, Donka and I are honored to welcome you to our Independence Day celebration," said Ambassador Robinson. He highlighted the historical significance of July 2, 1775, when General George Washington took command of a group of militiamen and volunteers during the Revolutionary War. This moment symbolized a commitment to self-determination and liberty.

Ambassador Robinson drew parallels between the American Revolutionary War and Latvia's struggle for independence. "The U.S. Revolutionary War and Latvia’s fight for independence have a lot in common—both are stories of people standing up to foreign rule and fighting for the right to govern themselves," he noted.

He emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and Latvia, grounded in shared democratic values and security cooperation through NATO. "As Secretary Rubio has said, 'the stronger our partners in NATO are, the stronger NATO is,'" Robinson stated.

The ambassador acknowledged Latvia's contributions to NATO and its leadership in defense spending goals set by President Trump. He also praised economic collaboration between the two nations that fosters growth and innovation.

Beyond geopolitical ties, Ambassador Robinson highlighted cultural exchanges that strengthen bonds between Americans and Latvians. "Our bond goes beyond geopolitics," he said.

In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Robinson expressed gratitude towards event sponsors including Amber Beverages, Coca-Cola, DOMUS, Evershed Sutherland Bitans Law Office, among others. He also thanked U.S service members present at the event for their dedication.

Reflecting on his tenure as ambassador in Latvia, he shared personal experiences with Latvian culture and hospitality: "So many Latvians opened their hearts and stories to us."

Ambassador Robinson closed his speech with appreciation for both countries’ enduring friendship: "Above all our shared history together – as friends partners Allies – only makes us stronger."
