DEG has recently activated a new photovoltaic system at its Cologne headquarters, replacing an older setup from 2008. This installation is part of DEG's ongoing commitment to renewable energy and sustainable solutions globally. The new system, consisting of 138 modules with a total output of 61 kilowatt peak (kWp), will generate electricity for DEG's own use. An additional system on a neighboring building contributes another 10 kWp.
Cologne receives approximately 900 hours of sunshine annually, enabling the photovoltaic system to produce around 58,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) each year. This amount covers about 80% of the electricity needed for DEG’s kitchen operations during weekdays. Outside regular business hours, the generated electricity supports base load consumers like the data center and heating systems.
Markus Rumens, head of Workplace & Mobility Services at DEG, stated: “The new photovoltaic system is the next step in our endeavours to optimise our buildings, our main focus being on the efficient and sustainable operation of our infrastructure.”
By harnessing solar power, DEG aims to decrease dependence on external power sources and lower emissions. In 2025 alone, this initiative resulted in saving approximately 12,000 kilograms of CO₂ emissions.
Globally in 2024, renewable energy projects financed by DEG produced around 34 terawatt hours of green electricity—enough to supply over 49 million people with power. The enhancement of DEG's system in Cologne emphasizes its dedication to resource conservation and energy efficiency improvements at its facilities.
