The U.S. Embassy in Dakar recently marked the 249th anniversary of American independence with a gathering attended by distinguished guests, including members of the Senegalese government and diplomatic corps. The event highlighted the longstanding partnership between the United States and Senegal, which has been a key ally in Africa for nearly 65 years.
The U.S. Ambassador emphasized the significant progress made through collaborative efforts in various sectors such as energy, military training, aviation, culture, education, health, and economic development. "For nearly 65 years, Senegal has been one of the United States’ most important partners in Africa," stated the ambassador.
This year alone saw an additional $125 million mobilized through the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Senegal Power Compact to improve electricity access for over 12 million people. The ambassador noted that both nations' militaries have engaged in joint exercises like Obangame Express and African Lion to strengthen defense ties.
In terms of economic connectivity, new direct flights between Dakar and Washington D.C., launched by United Airlines in May, complement Delta Airline’s existing service to New York. The ambassador also highlighted cultural exchanges evident at events like the Dakar Biennale.
The U.S.-Senegal partnership extends into education with over $70 million invested to enhance primary students' reading skills. This initiative has led to a significant increase in early-grade literacy rates. In public health, collaboration has resulted in establishing over 3,000 clinics across Senegal and substantial reductions in maternal and child mortality rates.
Economic cooperation is further evidenced by a microfinance institution created jointly three decades ago that now serves over 200,000 clients across all regions of Senegal. Additionally, American companies are making substantial contributions to Senegal's economy through investments in energy projects and financial services.
The ambassador acknowledged contributions from various donors who supported the evening's celebration and thanked embassy volunteers for their efforts. "And most of all," said the ambassador, "I’d like to thank each of you for your friendship and partnership."
Guests were invited to enjoy music provided by Vieux Mac Faye and his band as part of the festivities celebrating this enduring bilateral relationship.
