The U.S. Embassy in Niamey marked two significant milestones with a reception celebrating the 249th Independence Day of the United States and 65 years of diplomatic relations with Niger. The event, hosted by U.S. Ambassador Kathleen FitzGibbon, was attended by Nigerien government officials, diplomats, civil society leaders, and American citizens.
Ambassador FitzGibbon highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Niger, which is based on mutual respect and shared interests. She noted American investments in Niger's economic development, education, and security sectors. "The United States is proud to invest in Niger’s future," she stated. "We are creating opportunities through entrepreneurship, supporting the resilience of rural communities, and strengthening our collective security."
FitzGibbon also spoke about President Donald J. Trump's role in enhancing U.S. commercial investment abroad and stressed the importance of clear partnerships that yield results. She added that such celebrations demonstrate America's strength internationally through principled engagement and strategic cooperation: "Invest in Niger’s stability protects Nigeriens and American interests as we together can promote global security."
The United States remains a key partner for Niger as its largest bilateral donor. U.S.-funded programs aim to counter violent extremism, improve market access, build capacity, and support sustainable agriculture initiatives. Over 1,200 Nigeriens have taken part in exchange programs funded by the U.S., fostering a foundation of friendship and mutual progress.
