Ambassador Bryan D. Hunt delivered remarks at an Independence Day reception, emphasizing the enduring principles of democracy and freedom that underpin the United States' founding. Addressing a diverse audience, including Sierra Leone's Minister of Foreign Affairs Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba and other dignitaries, Ambassador Hunt highlighted the significance of America's 249-year-old Declaration of Independence.

"All men are created equal," Hunt quoted Thomas Jefferson, stressing the unalienable rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." He acknowledged these ideals have inspired global democratic movements since 1776.

The ambassador reflected on America's growth from its Atlantic origins to a nation embodying innovation and self-reliance. Highlighting the American Southwest as a region exemplifying these traits, he noted its unique blend of cultures and industries. He recognized challenges posed by globalization and political divisions but affirmed America's resilience through institutions built by its Founders.

Hunt also addressed U.S.-Sierra Leone relations, noting their historical ties dating back to colonial times. He emphasized the importance of trade and investment for Sierra Leone's development goals. The ambassador advocated for public-private partnerships as essential for economic growth in light of declining official development assistance budgets.

Acknowledging recent strides in Sierra Leone's political stability and economy since 2023 elections, Hunt praised initiatives like the Agreement for National Unity. He assured continued U.S. support in areas such as health, where joint efforts have reduced childhood deaths from malaria and improved maternal health.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Hunt expressed gratitude to American corporate sponsors for supporting the event and reiterated commitment to fostering a strong partnership between the United States and Sierra Leone.
