Claire A. Pierangelo Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Madagascar & Comoros

Good afternoon, and welcome to the Embassy of the United States' Independence Day Celebration. Ambassador Pierangelo extended his gratitude to the Government of Madagascar for their ongoing partnership, as well as to the event's sponsors affiliated with American companies. He also acknowledged his family, represented by his oldest son Luca.

In his speech, Ambassador Pierangelo emphasized the principles established when the United States signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. He stated, "Governments exist only with the consent of the people – that our rights do not come from kings or governments, but from our shared humanity." He highlighted that this belief has guided America's journey for nearly 250 years.

The event marked the beginning of a year-long celebration leading up to America's 250th birthday next July. Ambassador Pierangelo noted that this year also marks 150 years of official diplomatic relations between the United States and Madagascar, which began in 1875 with Colonel William W. Robinson's appointment as Consul in Tamatave.

Ambassador Pierangelo celebrated USAID's contributions over its 40-year presence in Madagascar. "USAID’s chapter here is ending," he stated, but affirmed continued support through life-saving assistance and programs improving health and climate resilience.

The ambassador praised over 1,680 Peace Corps Volunteers who have served in Madagascar since 1993 in education and agriculture sectors. He mentioned growing economic ties exemplified by Energy Fuels’ investment in Base Toliara.

He addressed U.S. commitment to human rights and anti-trafficking efforts in Madagascar, noting a recent operation dismantling an international tortoise trafficking network and a $2 million study to strengthen judicial responses to wildlife crime.

Ambassador Pierangelo spoke about deepening defense cooperation through joint military training with Malagasy forces. He expressed optimism about facing challenges together based on shared values and mutual respect.

"Thank you for attending our celebration this afternoon," concluded Ambassador Pierangelo.
