U.S.-Guyana partnership celebrated at 249th Independence Day event

Ambassador Nicole D. Theriot delivered remarks at the 249th anniversary of U.S. independence, highlighting the strong ties between the United States and Guyana. The event took place on June 27, 2025, with distinguished guests including President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and other notable figures from Guyana's government and civil society.

In her speech, Ambassador Theriot emphasized the cultural connections between New Orleans and Guyana, noting both regions' rich histories and diverse influences. "New Orleans reminds us of the strength and beauty that comes from unity," she said, drawing parallels between the resilience of both areas in facing challenges.

Theriot also highlighted ongoing cooperation between the U.S. and Guyana in various sectors. She mentioned military collaborations such as hosting the Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team exercise and developing coastal radar capabilities for Guyana's Coast Guard. The ambassador praised joint law enforcement efforts that led to significant drug seizures, strengthening regional security.

The ambassador announced developments in education through Peace Corps volunteers focusing on literacy, health, and environmental education in Guyana. Additionally, she reported a milestone in bilateral trade surpassing $4.7 billion U.S., alongside new ventures like industrial 3D printing services introduced by a U.S company.

Infrastructure projects were also discussed as key investments shaping future growth in Guyana. "As Guyana’s preferred partner," Theriot stated, "the United States is honored to be part of that journey."

Theriot expressed gratitude towards Deputy Chief of Mission Adrienne Galanek for her dedication over three years and acknowledged several embassy team members who contributed significantly to strengthening relations between the two nations.

Concluding her address with a toast to independence ideals and enduring friendship between their peoples, Ambassador Theriot echoed New Orleans' spirit: “Let the good times roll!”
