The U.S. Mission to South Africa hosted an Independence Day celebration on July 2, 2025, marking 249 years of American independence. Chargé d’Affaires David J. Greene delivered a speech highlighting the longstanding partnership between the United States and South Africa.
Greene welcomed South African dignitaries, including Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni, Executive Mayor of Tshwane Dr. Nasiphi Moya, and Executive Mayor Ekurhuleni Alderman Xhakaza. He expressed gratitude to the event's sponsors for their contributions.
In his remarks, Greene emphasized shared values between the two nations such as liberty, democracy, and opportunity. "Independence Day is a time to reflect on the ideals of the American story: liberty, democracy, opportunity," he said.
He spoke about the importance of economic ties between the U.S. and South Africa. "That’s why it matters that South Africa is the United States’ largest trading partner in Africa," Greene stated.
Greene also acknowledged AmCham South Africa's leadership in fostering transparency and growth within these commercial ties.
Highlighting cultural connections, Greene noted South Africa's influence in sports and arts on a global scale. He praised Minister McKenzie's efforts in promoting these sectors and commended local team Mamelodi Sundowns for their participation in international competitions.
The speech concluded with recognition of USAID's contributions to development work in South Africa as they transition into the State Department structure.
Greene closed by thanking attendees for their continued partnership: "Thank you for your partnership, your friendship, and your belief in what we can build together."
