World Bank appoints new representative for Solomon Islands and Vanuatu

Starting July 1, Bernard Harborne assumes the role of World Bank Group Resident Representative for Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. This position consolidates the World Bank Group’s leadership at the country level to support development priorities and foster private sector growth. Harborne will oversee programs from various arms of the World Bank Group, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)/International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) across both countries. His role is intended to streamline access to World Bank Group services and enhance efforts to address global challenges.

The focus in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu includes infrastructure projects like the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project, Vanuatu Climate Resilient Transport Project, and Tina River Hydropower Development Project in Solomon Islands. Additionally, efforts extend into health, private sector development, urban employment, and skills building.

Bernard Harborne joined the World Bank Group in 2004 as a lead technical specialist. His previous roles included working on investment operations related to local community development in conflict areas such as Afghanistan, Burundi, and Somalia. He also served as Country Manager in Côte d’Ivoire and as Resident Representative in Timor-Leste.

The World Bank Group aims to eliminate poverty globally while maintaining environmental sustainability. It operates in over 100 countries offering financing solutions that create jobs and tackle urgent development issues.
