Ambassador Dunnigan addressed attendees at the U.S. Independence Day reception, marking the 249th anniversary of American independence. She thanked the Gori Girls Choir, the State of Georgia National Guard Band, and the United States Marines for their contributions to the event.
Reflecting on democracy, Ambassador Dunnigan emphasized three elements she considers vital for its flourishing: promise, duty, and optimism. She stated that the United States has made significant progress since its founding and highlighted a shared promise between Americans and Georgians. "A promise that when free people are given the right to speak, debate, worship, and vote, the greater good will prevail," she said.
The ambassador noted her observations in Georgia regarding efforts toward democracy. She mentioned witnessing religious freedom in Tbilisi and praised the U.S.-Georgian partnership over three decades. She cited examples of how this partnership has positively impacted various sectors in Georgia.
Ambassador Dunnigan also discussed duty as a key tenet of democracy. She acknowledged sacrifices made by military personnel and others defending democratic values. Quoting Vice President Harris, she remarked on the importance of respecting political opponents' rights.
Expressing optimism about democracy's future in both countries, she credited youth engagement as a source of hope. The ambassador thanked her team at the U.S. Embassy and USAID for their work supporting U.S.-Georgian relations.
Announcing her upcoming retirement after 33 years as a diplomat alongside her husband Harry, Ambassador Dunnigan expressed gratitude for Georgian hospitality during her tenure. She concluded with a toast to democracy's promise, duty, and optimism.
