In observance of Memorial Day on May 25, U.S. Ambassador Carmen G. Cantor and Secretary Kandhi Elieisar from the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Sokeh’s Rock landmark in Pohnpei, FSM. The wreaths were crafted locally using biodegradable fresh flowers and pandanus fibers.

Christopher Knight captured the event where Ambassador Cantor and Secretary Elieisar laid the wreaths. The ceremony was attended by several officials including Special Advisor Mr. Lorin Robert, FSM Chief of Staff Leo Falcam Jr., Commander Stewart Peter of the FSM Maritime Wing, and other representatives from various organizations.

In addition to the Pohnpei commemoration, Seabees from the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE (NMCB5) conducted a similar ceremony at Waterfront Park in Yap, FSM. Lt. Bradford Garrigues led this event with Electrician Chief Petty Officer Kevin Appleby and Utilitiesman 2nd Class Patrick Krupa participating as part of their deployment for construction and humanitarian efforts in the region.

Joyce McClure photographed the Seabees' salute during their Memorial Day ceremony in Yap. Memorial Day is observed in the United States on the last Monday of May to honor service members who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Compact of Free Association allows Micronesians to serve in these forces, a tradition upheld since World War II.
