On May 23rd, U.S. Ambassador Carmen G. Cantor initiated the Pohnpei Girl Scouts Pilot Program at the U.S. Embassy in Kolonia. The event was attended by FSM President David W. Panuelo and First Lady Patricia Edwin. Ambassador Cantor expressed her enthusiasm for inspiring and empowering young girls in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) through the Girl Scouts program, highlighting its focus on community improvement and fostering a belief in limitless potential. Reflecting on her own experience as a Girl Scout in Puerto Rico, she shared her commitment to these ideals.

The Girl Scouts organization was founded in 1912 by Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low, who held the first meeting in Savannah, Georgia with 18 young girls. This initiative has grown into a global movement that continues to inspire millions of girls worldwide.

In Pohnpei, the Girl Scouts is led by President Justleen Ezekias, Vice President Luise Sharma, Secretary McClaine Gilmete, and Treasurer Lindsay Lowe. Due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, participation is currently limited to 30 girls; however, troop leaders aim to recruit more adult volunteers to expand the program across all four states of FSM.

Ambassador Cantor hopes that this program will instill courage and confidence in young girls within FSM, encouraging them to take on leadership roles in their communities.
