Acting Consul General JoEllen Gorg addressed attendees at the 249th U.S. Independence Day celebration held at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence in Lagos on June 30, 2025. In her remarks, she welcomed guests and highlighted the enduring partnership between the United States and Nigeria.
Gorg acknowledged the presence of distinguished guests including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, other governors, deputy governors, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Reflecting on American values such as freedom and opportunity that have defined the nation for nearly 250 years, Gorg emphasized their importance in international relations. She noted that this year's celebration also marked a commitment to strengthening economic ties with Nigeria.
"Under the Trump Administration," Gorg stated, "the United States is prioritizing commercial engagement over development assistance." She referenced a new Commercial Diplomacy Strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa announced in May and mentioned several deals signed at a recent U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Angola aimed at boosting economic partnerships.
Highlighting local efforts, Gorg spoke about the U.S.-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership—a five-year initiative designed to enhance trade and investment by removing barriers. She praised Nigeria's selection as one of only five African countries for this agreement.
The acting consul general shared statistics illustrating robust trade relations: two-way trade between both nations reached nearly $13 billion last year while U.S. foreign direct investment in Nigeria increased by 5.5% to $6.5 billion.
Acknowledging cultural connections through diaspora communities, Gorg noted that many Nigerians living in America are making significant contributions across various sectors like technology and healthcare.
She urged responsible travel from Nigerian visitors to America while reinforcing their role as ambassadors for their country during visits abroad.
In conclusion, Gorg encouraged collaboration among investors and officials present to tackle trade challenges together: "The world’s eyes are on Nigeria—not just because of its size but because of its growing influence."
Gorg expressed gratitude towards event sponsors who contributed generously along with thanking consulate staff involved in organizing festivities before inviting Governor Sanwo-Olu for further remarks.
