The U.S. Mission to Vietnam is currently accepting applications for the 2026 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship. This program targets young leaders from Southeast Asia, focusing on critical themes such as civic engagement, natural resources, innovation and entrepreneurship, and society and governance.

The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is part of the U.S. government's public diplomacy efforts to provide skills training in the United States for youth in Southeast Asia. The initiative aims to enhance leadership capabilities, strengthen ties between the United States and Southeast Asia, and foster a community of leaders addressing shared challenges.

Eligible candidates are Vietnamese citizens aged 18 to 25 who are either full-time undergraduate students or recent graduates. Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities, an interest in community service, and proficiency in English. The deadline for applications is set for 11:59 p.m., Monday, July 21, 2025 (Vietnam Time).

Participants will engage in an intensive five-week academic program designed to deepen their understanding of the United States while enhancing their leadership skills. The program includes seminars, group presentations, lectures, educational travel, site visits, and volunteer opportunities within local communities. If conditions permit, participants will also partake in an educational study tour across different areas of the United States.

Applications are open for four specific YSEALI Academic Fellowship Programs:

- Civic Engagement: Hosted by Northern Arizona University, Portland State University, and University of Nebraska at Omaha.

- Natural Resources: Conducted by University of Montana, East-West Center and California State University, Chico.

- Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Led by University of Connecticut, University of Kansas and University of Nevada at Reno.

- Society and Governance: Organized by James Madison University, Syracuse University and Western Washington University.

All participant costs are covered by the U.S. Department of State.

Eligibility criteria include being a citizen from one of several Southeast Asian countries listed in the announcement but not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Candidates should have little or no prior experience studying or traveling in the United States.
