The U.S. Embassy in Uganda held a celebration on June 28, 2025, to mark the upcoming Independence Day and highlight the theme of "Spirit of Volunteerism." Ambassador Popp addressed attendees at the event, which emphasized community engagement as a core American value.

Ambassador Popp noted that volunteerism has been an integral part of American society since its inception. He said, "Volunteerism and community service are deeply ingrained in America. From the earliest days of our republic, Americans have come together to support one another, build strong communities, and address societal needs."

The celebration featured various activities showcasing this spirit of volunteerism. More than 100 volunteers from U.S. companies, Ugandan alumni of U.S. government-funded exchange programs, Peace Corps Volunteers, and U.S. Embassy staff mentored over 1,600 students at St. Peter’s Secondary School.

Additionally, the Embassy's Nile Explorer Bus was present to demonstrate its work in health, STEM, and civic engagement by engaging with Ugandan secondary students.

American Tower Corporation (ATC) contributed by donating a technology lab and basketball court to St. Peter’s as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives across Uganda.

Ambassador Popp expressed gratitude to U.S. companies for their support during the event: "I also want to take a moment here to thank each of the U.S. companies...for their generous support to this U.S. Independence Day picnic for the great food, drinks and music that we are enjoying."

The United States' partnership with Uganda was highlighted through efforts such as supporting Uganda during its recent Ebola outbreak and providing lifesaving HIV/AIDS care for over 1.4 million Ugandans.

In closing remarks, Ambassador Popp reflected on the importance of volunteerism: "Let us reflect on the 'Spirit of Volunteerism' as a reminder of the power each of us has to make a positive impact."
