The United States has nominated Rosa María Payá for a position as commissioner on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The election by member states of the Organization of American States is scheduled for June 27. The IACHR plays a crucial role in defending human rights and fundamental freedoms across the hemisphere.

He highlighted her leadership in confronting authoritarianism and promoting democratic values as aligning with the ideals upon which the IACHR was founded.
Rubio expressed confidence in Payá's potential contributions to the Commission, noting her ability to address challenges with innovative solutions while focusing on serving people throughout the Americas. "I have full confidence in her ability to make the Commission more effective, efficient, and relevant," he said.
If elected, Payá is expected to serve with independence and integrity. Her presence would aim to strengthen the Commission's capacity to advocate for those facing repression and abuse. Rubio called on other OAS member states to support Payá’s candidacy to maintain a strong defense of human rights within the IACHR framework.
