Ambassador Julie Chung addressed a gathering at the Lumina Ballroom in Colombo to commemorate the 249th anniversary of U.S. independence. In her remarks, she expressed gratitude towards sponsors and the embassy team for organizing the event attended by nearly 700 guests.
Chung introduced the theme of the evening as a "Great American Road Trip," highlighting America's landscapes, cultural heritage, and spirit of exploration. She noted that Americans and Sri Lankans have shared journeys for centuries, citing historical figures like Mark Twain and Harriett Winslow who visited Sri Lanka.
The ambassador reflected on her personal experiences with road trips, sharing memories from childhood family vacations and more recent travels during COVID-19. She emphasized how such trips reflect overcoming challenges together—a metaphor for the U.S.-Sri Lanka relationship.
Chung praised bilateral achievements in global security, education, economic opportunities, regional stability, and open sea lanes vital to trade. She mentioned initiatives like the US-BUS mobile American Space aimed at enhancing people-to-people connections in Sri Lanka.
Highlighting ongoing cooperation, Chung referenced Admiral Sam Paparo's visit and maritime collaboration through an aircraft gift to strengthen security ties. She also acknowledged economic partnerships facilitated by organizations like AmCham and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Chung invoked historical figures like Patrick Henry to inspire continued partnership with Sri Lanka based on freedom and shared progress.
"Happy Independence Day, America!" she concluded.
